Jokowi: I am no longer governor of Jakarta

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian President-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo received the approval of his resignation as the governor of Jakarta on Thursday.

"I am no longer the governor of Jakarta. I received the approval letter signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono this morning (October 16)," Jokowi said during a gathering of the boards of Jakarta's neighborhoods at Senayan Sport Center here on Thursday.

The letter of approval with the president's seal was sent by the Home Ministry vide number 98/T/2014 regarding Jokowi's resignation and also for Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama to take over as Jokowi's successor.

Furthermore, Jokowi pointed out how Jakarta as the capital city would always be part of his responsibilities, along with all other regions of the Republic of Indonesia.

"Jakarta is an important part of the Republic of Indonesia. So all problems in Jakarta are the president's responsibility too," he remarked.

"To build this city (Jakarta), we all have to cooperate, support and encourage one another," he emphasized.

Jokowi further assured that after the governance of Jakarta is handed over to Basuki Tjahaja Purnama "Ahok," the central government would continue to support and assist the capital city in tackling its problems.

"The government of Jakarta will have the full support of the centre in resolving problems, such as flooding and transportation, in the city. We will sort out those issues soon," he affirmed.

At the same event, Deputy Governor Ahok confirmed that he had been intimated about the approval letter.

"I know that he (Jokowi) has received the letter. He is now the seventh president of Indonesia. We hope he will keep supporting Jakarta," he stated.

The meeting of the neighborhoods' boards at the Senayan Sport Center was turned into a farewell for Jokowi, with board members congratulating him as the new Indonesian president.

Jokowi will be inaugurated as the seventh president of Indonesia at the parliamentary building in Jakarta on October 20.
