REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Marine and Fisheries has mapped aquaculture production centers in a bid to improve the competitiveness of the marine and fisheries sector, stated Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo.
"In a bid to overcome the problems of fishery seeds distribution, we have mapped the seed production centers in the field of fishery cultivation," the marine and fisheries minister remarked in a written statement on Thursday.
The minister noted that mapping has been carried out to make the marine and fisheries sector more competitive and to make Indonesia the world's largest aquaculture producer.
Sharif revealed that the mapping of seed production centers was related to several leading commodities such as vaname shrimp, catfish, patin fish (pangasius sp.), and tilapia fish.
"It is a real effort by the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries to improve seed fisheries in Indonesia through revitalization and industrialization," Sharif remarked.
Thus, he emphasized that the aquaculture industry strives to produce competitive and sustainable products.
"This is important because the aquaculture industry in 2030 will be supporting the national economy," the minister pointed out.
He stated that the target is achievable as Indonesia is the fourth-largest producer of farmed fish in the world.
Sharif also noted that the National Fish Logistics System (SLIN) will help to stabilize the flow of fishery production and distribution from the upstream to the downstream industry.
"The SLIN is the key to improving the capacity and stability of the upstream to downstream fishery production system," the minister emphasized.
According to him, the SLIN will also function to control inter-regional price disparities and to meet the domestic demand.
By lending support to the SLIN, the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries has formulated a road map for developing cooling warehouses from 2011 to 2015 and plans to build around 21 cooling warehouses in 2014, he remarked.
Earlier, Saut Hutagalung, the director general of fisheries product processing and marketing, stated that developing SLIN by improving the fishing port facilities across various regions in the country is believed to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic fishing industry.
"The success in building the marine logistics system will not only strengthen food sovereignty but also enhance the competitiveness of the fishing industry," Hutagalung noted here recently.
