REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Government of Jakarta Capital City will allocate a 40-hectare plot of land for constructing city parks in a bid to accelerate the implementation of the green spaces program by 2015.

"In total, we have proposed 50 hectares for this purpose, including 40 hectares for city parks and 10 hectares for cemetery. So, we do hope that the local representatives council (DPRD) will approve it," Head of Jakarta Landscaping and Cemetery Department Nandar Sukandar stated here on Monday.

Nandar explained that of the 40 hectares allocated for city parks, an area of 10 hectares each with be set aside for North, South, East, and West Jakarta, respectively.

"If the proposal is passed, Jakarta will become more greener, beautiful, and healthier. More number of green spaces can also reduce the air pollution," he pointed out.

As of now, Jakarta has 83.27 hectares of city parks in eight sectors and 186.95 hectares of neighborhood parks in 1,170 sectors.

Jakarta also has 186.95 hectares of green tracks located in 1,170 spots, 50.83 hectares of waterfronts in 144 spots, 644.38 hectares of urban forests in 59 locations, and 1,107.5 hectares of farm lands.

"Every year, we try to increase the number of green spaces by expanding and maintaining the city parks, green tracks, and urban forests, among others," Nandar revealed.

Therefore, he asserted that it was the responsibility of the community to maintain the parks, including the plants, so that the implementation of the new green spaces program will become sustainable.

The government also encourages the private sectors to participate in the implementation of the program by planting trees in city parks or in their business surroundings.

"The green spaces project is a common responsibility for the sake of all city residents, and hence, let us make a green city for a healthier environment," Nandar emphasized.
