REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- A calligraphy exhibition will enliven the international Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ), a Qur'an recitation competition focusing on tone and rhythm, to be held in Palembang, South Sumatra, on September 23-27, 2014.
The calligraphy exhibition is being held in cooperation with the Indonesian Calligraphy Institute, Head of Public Welfare of South Sumatra Provincial administration Richard Cahyadi remarked here on Thursday.
The calligraphy exhibition will be attended by participants from all regions across Indonesia, he stated.
Richard noted that the exhibition was held to liven up the international MTQ 2014 contest, which will have the participation of Muslims from around the world.
Also scheduled during the MTQ is a signing inscription of the Indonesian Calligraphy Institute of South Sumatra Province by Governor Alex Noerdin.
The governor will write calligraphy letters, which shall be continuously written by the painters in Palembang, Richard stated.
The event organizing committee will also present a national calligraphy trainer, who will teach the visitors to write Al-Qur'an letters with a special touch of art.
Moreover, the biggest Al-Qur'an in the world, which has been made by several ulemas and calligraphy artists in South Sumatra in the past eight years, will also be showcased as part of the event.
They managed to carve 30 chapters of the glorious verses of the Qur'an in 315 pieces of tamarind wood. The overall thickness including the cover is up to 9 meters and the size of each page is 177 x 140 x 2.5 centimeters.
At least 40 cubic meters of tamarind wood was used for making this Quran. Each edge of the Al-Quran page is decorated with characteristic Palembang carved ornaments.
