REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Islamic students have urged the police to arrest anyone found attacking the joint office of the Islamic Student Association Alumni Corps (KAHMI) and the Islamic Student Association Coordination Board (Badko HMI).

Making their protests heard at a rally staged outside the Riau provincial police station here on Thursday, Badko HMI chief Munawir Mattareng said, "We urge the newly inducted Riau provincial police chief to take firm action and investigate thoroughly the attack on the Riau-Riau Islands Islamic Student Association (HMI) office."

Munawir also demanded that the police arrest the mastermind behind the assault, threatening to pressure the new Riau provincial police chief into stepping down if he failed to take action.

The police must also ensure the security of all student movements, he said.

"Unless the demand is met within 24 hours, we will stage an even larger rally. HMI, through the HMI executive board, will instruct all branches of the association throughout the country to act," he stated.

He noted that weakness on the part of the law enforcement agency had given rise to widespread crime and hooliganism.

At the peaceful rally, scores of students also asked Riau Provincial Police Chief Brig. Gen. Dolly Bambang Hermawan to meet them. However, police personnel securing the rally rejected their demand.

"We will pass on the request to the provincial police chief to follow it up," police spokesman Commissioner M. Siahaan said.

An eyewitness claimed a group of unidentified people had attacked the HMI office early Friday (Sept. 5).
