REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEMARANG - Indonesian Port Corporation III, or Pelindo III, had been carrying out certain seaport projects in Central and East Java, General Manager of Container Terminal, Semarang, Central Java, Iwan Sabatini reported here on Friday.

"Currently, Pelindo III is working on some strategic projects, one of which is constructing facilities for Tanjung Emas Seaport, Semarang," he stated.

In addition, construction of a terminal in Teluk Lamong Seaport in Surabaya, East Java, is also being carried out.

"Teluk Lamong is located between Tanjung Perak and Gresik, East Java, with a domestic capacity of 342 thousand TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) and an international capacity of 435 thousand TEU," Iwan said.

The new terminal is facilitated by 10 units of ship-to-shore crane, 50 units of straddle carrier, and 20 units of automatic stacking crane.

"These equipment have been installed to anticipate an increase of 6 million TEU containers in East Java. The container terminal also functions to connect seaports in the eastern part of Indonesia," Iwan explained.

PT Pelindo III will also develop seaport and industrial areas located in the north side of the west of Gresik.

"The project area of the seaport is 371 hectares, while the industrial area is 1,761 hectares," Iwan said.

The seaport area is equipped with many facilities, including several docks, open yard, warehouse storage, power generation, liquid cargo storage, coal stock yard, among others. Currently, Pelindo III has a subsidiary Surabaya West Shipping Lane, or Alur Pelayaran Barat Surabaya, which serves to manage the flow of the western entrance to the Tanjung Perak Port. The service is to guarantee the groove's depth is kept at -14 feet, thus allowing larger size commercial ships to anchor.
