REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANGKOK -- Thailand is hosting the International Nuclear Science and Technology Conference 2014 in Bangkok from today through Saturday, paving the way for the kingdom to become a leader in nuclear science and technology in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the foreseeable future.

The three-day conference, themed "Moving Toward the Future with Nuclear Technology", is being attended by relevant experts, academics, scientists, and researchers on nuclear technology from around the world, aimed to provide a platform for ideas and experience exchange in order to lead to further research and development of knowledge internationally.

The conference is also a stage for Thailand to exhibit national potential to become an ASEAN leader in nuclear technology.

Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) director Somporn Chongkham acknowledged that Thailand is now a leader of nuclear technology in many areas, especially in the medical and agricultural sectors.

Dr Somporn pointed out Thailand has successfully produced 30 radiopharmaceutics and irradiated fruits for export to the United States, including longan, mangosteen and dragon fruit, along with using the technology in environmental and nutrient projects, as well as in safe nuclear programs.

The TINT chief said his agency plans to propose national nuclear strategies over the next 10-20 years to the new Thai government after it is formed.
