French journalists arrested at Jayapura immigration office

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Jayapura Immigration Office still examines two French journalists who were arrested in Wamena on Wednesday for alleged violations. According to Chief of Jayapura Immigration Office, Garda Tampubolon, the two journalists are Arte TV crew, namely Thomas Charles Danbois and Valentine Bourrat.

They are doing journalistic activities in Papua during their visit. They investigated the armed groups activities in Jayapura and Wamena.

"Both of them are still assessed by immigration officer," Tampubolon said on Monday.

France Embassy has called Tampubolon to know condition of their citizens. Tampubolon still not sure whether the two journalists are only subjected to administrative sanctions or pro justicia sanction.

A shooting incident occured in Lanny Jaya, Pegunungan Papua on Monday last week that left two police officers (Brig. Zulkifli and Brig. Prayoga Ginuni) and a civilian dead. Zulkifli was shot in his head, while Ginuni was found dead during evacuation.

The armed groups were constantly on the move as they sought to control particular areas. Incident in Lanny Jaya occurred when eight police officers were traveling to Maki village to provide community counseling.
