REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Taiwan will extend One Village One Product (OVOP) cooperation in a number of regions in Indonesia, according to an official at the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises.
"The OVOP cooperation with Taiwan will be extended until 2015," Meliadi Sembiring, a deputy for resources assessment at the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry, said here on Wednesday.
He noted that the cooperation with Taiwan on the OVOP scheme was initially scheduled for completion at the end of 2014. The cooperation included Taiwan expert guidance for OVOP orange production in Badung District and asparagus in Bangli District.
"This cooperation is considered to have been successful, so it will be extended until the end of 2015," he added.
He pointed out that both sides had agreed to prolong the cooperation because it was able to contribute encouraging and positive results. "The cooperation has provided positive results for the economic development of the local farmers who are members of cooperatives," Sembiring stated.
In the meantime, a Taiwanese economic delegation will visit Indonesia in November to expand trade and economic cooperation.
The delegation to be headed by a deputy minister would visit Indonesia when Indonesia had a new government, a director at the Taiwanese economic ministry Amelia WJ Day said. She remarked that Taiwan was keen on expanding bilateral relations with Indonesia in various economic sectors.
Not only with Indonesia, Taiwan also hoped to expand economic and trade cooperation with other countries in South East Asia, such as the Philippines, Thailand, and Myanmar, she said. The Taiwanese economic ministry was also seeking to prevent double taxation with its trading partners to protect Taiwanese investors and to reduce business cost, she pointed out.
Currently, Taiwan has signed investment protection agreements with 29 countries, including the United States, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and Malaysia. It has also signed double taxation prevention agreements with 20 countries, including New Zealand, Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, and Vietnam.
