REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANGKOK -- Eight Thais are scheduled to arrive home at noon Saturday after being evacuated from Libya while a group of Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry officials have arrived in Tunisia to coordinate evacuating remaining Thai citizens still reluctant to leave Libya.
Ministry officials, led by Thongchai Chasawath, director-general of Consular Affairs Department, arrived in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, at around 6.30pm (local time) on Friday.
They are scheduled to meet the Thai honorary consul in Tunis before proceeding to Djerba in Tunisia, which was located close to Libya, later Saturday to coordinate and map out plans for evacuating Thai citizens from Libya.
According to the plan, Mr Thongchai and ministry officials would assist Thai evacuees from Libya and send them to a centre in Tunis before flying them by a chartered flight to Thailand if the number of returnees was large enough.
However, many Thais in Libya were still reluctant to leave that country while the Foreign Affairs Ministry wanted them to prioritize their safety and not worry about travel expenses.
