REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - In another demonstration of its solidarity with Member States, ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh sent a letter to Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines Albert del Rosario, expressing the Association's sympathy to the country which suffered the brunt of Typhoon Rammasun last week.

Secretary General Minh in his letter conveyed sympathy for the "loss of lives and properties in the communities of Bicol and Southern Luzon regions which have been affected by Typhoon Ramasun," the ASEAN Secretariat said in a press statement over last weekend.

While the damages were minimal compared to Haiyan, there were reported cases of around 30 fatalities and significant damages to properties and public facilities in the affected regions. It has been ten months since the Philippines was hit by super Typhoon Haiyan and it was clear that the lessons learned from that experience have strengthened the country's disaster preparedness and response as shown by the minimal loss sustained this time.

Thus, the ASEAN Chief commended the Government of the Philippines for its "early warning efforts and implementation of disaster preparedness plans which have prevented greater loss and damages."
