REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JERUSALEM - Israeli authorities confirmed they had arrested a number of Jewish suspects in the death of a Palestinian teenager whose death set off violent protests.
In a statement, Israeli police said the suspects were arrested early Sunday. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information about an ongoing investigation, said six people were in custody. Israel's Shin Bet security agency said the suspects remained in custody and were being interrogated.
Mohammed Abu Khdeir (16 years) was abducted last week and his charred body found a short while later in a Jerusalem forest in what Palestinians say was a revenge killing for the earlier deaths of three Israeli teens. Earlier, a Palestinian official said initial autopsy showed that that Khdeir was burnt alive.
Khdeir cousin's, Tariq Abu Khdeir (15 years) a US citizen who relatives said was beaten and arrested by Israeli police during clashes sparked by the killing of Khdeir. Israeli police said Tariq Abu Khdeir resisted arrest, attacked officers and was carrying a slingshot for lobbing stones when he was arrested. He has been sentenced to nine days of house arrest. The US State Department said it was "profoundly troubled" by reports of his beating and demanded an investigation.
