REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KHARTOUM -- An Indian contractor with the UNAMID peacekeeping mission in Sudan's troubled Darfur region has been freed after 94 days in captivity, a statement said on Friday.

The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur said Irfan Jaffery, who was kidnapped on March 11, was released on Thursday in Kabkabiya.

"The contractor, a national of India, appears to be unharmed and in good health," it said.

The statement said he had been abducted by armed men on March 11 while walking with a colleague in a residential area of El Fasher.

The town serves as headquarters for UNAMID.

UNAMID has more than 19,000 soldiers and police as well as about 1,000 foreign civilians and 3,000 Sudanese.
