Newmont stops its production in Batu Hijau mining

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - US-based mining giant, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) stopped the operation of copper concentrate processing at Batu Hijau mining areas due to by full storage facilities. Head of Corporate Communication in NNT, Rubi W Purnomo said that the company still sought government's export permit.

Batu Hijau mine area managed to increase more than 50 times of added value. The company has postponed its policy to implement "standby status" to its employees which allow the company to slash employee's compensation. The postpone was taken while waiting the result of ministerial meeting this week. 

"We always communicate with employees about the current condition. Most of employees have been ready to accept their salary reduction if necessary," Purnomo said recently.

NNT is working hard to cooperate with government to overcome this issue through the processing plant or smelter development with PT Freeport Indonesia. NNT also has negotiated and signed a conditional agreement about copper concentrate supply with two local companies in Indonesia. Company is now finishing the third agreement.
