REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANGKOK -- Few protesters appeared at anti- coup rallies planned at eight major spots in Thai capital Bangkok on Sunday.
Only a group of nearly 200 protesters gathered in front of Terminal 21 department store at the Asoke intersection from around 12 p.m. local time with anti-coup banners and three-finger signs as a symbol for anti-coup.
A woman was reported arrested after standing silently in front of Gaysorn Plaza at the Ratchaprasong Intersection wearing a mask in an apparent symbolic protest against the coup.
Anti-coup rallies were expected to emerge on Sunday at eight spots in Bangkok, including Ratchaprasong intersection, King Taksin Monument, Laksi Monument roundabout, areas near CentralPlaza Bangna, Theparak intersection in Samut Prakan, Victory Monument, Democracy Monument and areas near Seacon Square.
Deputy Police Commissioner-General Pol Colonel Somyos Pumphanmuang on Saturday said some 38 companies of troops and police would guard the eight spots and rapid deployment units will be on standby on Sunday.
But given the fewer protesters than expected, the number of troops and polices has been reduced.
No clashes and casualties were reported so far.
