REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HANOI -- Vietnam always attaches importance to strengthening cooperation with the United States, especially in defense and security, said Nguyen Chi Vinh, Vietnamese deputy minister of national defense.

Vinh made the statement while receiving Wendy Sherman, under secretary of state for political affairs of the United States in Vietnam's capital Hanoi on Tuesday.

Vinh said during the meeting that the two countries should promote exchanges to better coordinate in strategic consultations on defense and security, clearing bombs and mines, ensuring maritime security, and exchanging war memorabilia.

Wendy Sherman, for her part, expressed her hope that more exchanges and experience sharing activities will be held between the two countries' navies.

Sherman thanked the Vietnamese government and army for the support in the search for remains of American personnel missing in action during the war in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese deputy minister earlier said Vietnam allows the United States to increase the number of teams responsible for the searching work.
