Riau suffers a loss of 10 trillion IDR due to haze

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKAN BARU -- Vice Chairman of General Economic Affairs and International Cooperation in Indonesia's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Viktor Butar Butar explained that haze due to land and forest fires had resulted a loss of Riau economic up to 10 trillion IDR. Riau provincial government has set an emergency status due to forest fire to clear new land for palm oil plantation.

"The loss is causing the declining business productivity, mobilization of goods and people through land, the delayed of sea transportation and air flight that disrupted by smog," Butar Butar said recently.

If Riau's gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated 342.69 trillion IDR, the loss of business activity due to haze reached 30 percent of it. The market price of food, such as fish rose from 20 thousand IDR to 30 thousand IDR as the delayed of fishing vessels.

"Sea transportation, air and land are the lifeblood of local economy. If it is disturbed then its productivity will automatically drop," Butar Butar added.

The loss of health sector will certainly increase. The impact of smog, many people are attacked by asthma triggering the disease. It also has implication for heart disease.
