REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR -- The Indonesian government plans to build an airport at Raja Ampat in West Papua, one of the country's well-known tourist destinations.
In a press statement received here on Saturday, the Directorate General of Air Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation said it has reached agreement with the Raja Ampat district administration to build the airport.
The project is aimed at supporting economic, trade and, especially, tourism development in the region, particularly in Raja Ampat.
To speed work on the project, support would be needed from the regional government and the Directorate General of Air Transportation.
The agreement is to be used as a general reference for the Directorate General of Air Transportation and the West Papua provincial administration.
It was aimed at assuring that the new airport is used as a public facility to serve people traveling from and to the district of Raja Ampat and surrounding regions.
The project will be carried out in stages involving parties in the Raja Ampat district.
