Rupiah gains againts US dollar

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The rupiah value gained against the US dollar in the first minutes of opening trade on Thursday.

The currency traded at the level of 12,075 per dollar in inter-bank transaction strengthening from 12,086 earlier.

"The US dollar tends to weaken against the majority of the global currencies including rupiah on reports of the US retail sales being stagnant," chief researcher of Monex Investindo Futures, Ariston Tjendra, said.

The new governor of the Fed Janet Yellen will postpone giving her testimony before the US Banking Committee on the blizzard.

"Extreme weather that adversely affcted the US economy would has its impact on the market sentiment , giving pressure on the dollar," he said.

He said solid Chinese trade data beyond expectation also contributed to strengthening demand for risky assets.

The improvement in the economic performance of the world's second largest economy ease worries over global economic slowdown , he said.

Meanwhile, chief researcher of Trust Securities, Reza Priyambada said the market players responded positively to the Fed's commitment to expansion of the US economy that would open greater opportunity for Indonesian to increase exports to that country.

"The result would be positive for the country's trade balance," he said.
