REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KATHMANDU -- Nepal's parliament on Monday elected Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala as new prime minister nearly three months after the national election in November last year.

Koirala, 74, secured 405 votes when 553 lawmakers cast ballots in the election and 148 of them voted against him.

NC, a centrist party, emerged as the largest party from the Constituent Assembly (CA) election.

Koirala was only candidate in the PM election, and secured overwhelming votes as he was backed by the second largest party CPN-UML.

The third largest party UCPN (Maoist) had already decided to remain in opposition front in the parliament.

Koirala said after the election that despite the failure to form a national unity government, he would reach out to opposition parties. "My priority is promulgation of a new constitution within a year through consensus and reconciliation among the parties," Koirala said.

With the election of new prime minister, Nepal is expected to restart the process of writing a new constitution of the country which is a challenging task.
