REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources plans to increase national gas production by exploring tight gas. Seismic survey is carried out to explore the potential of tight gas in Indonesia.

Director of Oil and Gas Upstream Business Development, Hendra Fadly  said that they would continue exploration after doing the seismic survey.

Tight gas is natural gas produced from reservoir rocks with low permeability through massive hydraulic fracturing, which is necessary to produce the gas well at economic rates. The fracturing process between tight gas is similar to shale gas.

In theory, Indonesia has large potential of tight gas, but it needs more seismic study and exploration on the field.

East Kalimantan, Java, South Sumatra, and North Sumatra are potentially rich with tight gas. Tight gas has been explored by United States and Canada.
