20 Indonesian street children to participate at World Cup Brazil

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- About 20 Indonesian street children will participate at Street Child World Cup in Rio de Janiero, Brazil on March 27, 2014. Transmuda Energy Nusantara (TEN) Foundation that joined with some non-governmental organizations would select the children from Medan, Makassar, Surabaya, Palembang, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.

Chairman of TEN Foundation, Mahir Basayut explained that the team had selected 250 street children since January 2014, such as in Medan and Makassar on January 11, Surabaya and Palembang on January 18, also Bandung and Yogyakarta on January 25. They succeed to select 150 best street children in Jakarta.

"We will press the number to 30 children to be finalized to 20 (10 boys and 10 girls) as Garuda Baru national team. They will be quarantined and departed to Brazil," Basayut said recently.

The 20 street children are aged around 13-16 year old and dropped out of school. They at least have lived on streets for six months and got recommendation of foundation where they live. Street Child World Cup 2014 will be held two months before World Cup 2014. The event will be attended by more than 20 countries. This is the second time of Street Child World Cup celebration after South Africa in 2010.
