Indonesia grants remission to 8,429 convicts on Christmas

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government has granted special remission to a total of 8,429 Christian convicts, including the 161 people who were immediately released on Christmas day.

The special remission was granted to those who have shown good behavior and obedience while serving the sentences in prison, stated the law and human rights ministry's director general of correction, Handoyo Sudrajat, in a press statement on Wednesday.

The government reduced their time in prison by 15 days up to two months.

The number of prisoners and convicts in Indonesia stands at 161,566 people.
