REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CANBERRA -- Australians Kelvin Hughes has permanently installed a SharpEye S-Band radar and antenna on Christmas Island, the company said in a news release on 16 December.

The company first installed a SharpEye radar on the island, which is an Australian territory about 2,600 km northwest of Perth, during trials commissioned by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation that began in August 2011.

Following its success in monitoring maritime traffic on the northern side of the island, the radar has now "been installed on a permanent tower", Kelvin Hughes said.

Kelvin Hughes claims that the advanced compression technology employed in SharpEye radars is markedly superior to that available from magnetron-based radars.
