REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BENGKULU -- The Enggano Island in the North Bengkulu district is expected to become a cow and buffalo breeding center in the Bengkulu province, an official has said.

"We will provide 2,000 hectares of land for the cow and buffalo breeding center in the province," local Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Department spokesman Irianto Abdullah said here on Monday.

He said Bengkulu could accommodate a cattle population of 1.3 million, although the province currently has a cattle population of about 300,000 only. The aim is to breed about one million animals.

"The cow breeding program will start in 2014 on Enggano Island, which is home to about 2,800 people," he noted, adding that besides cows and buffaloes, goats and some varieties of poultry will also be bred on the island.
