REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Pulp and paper giant company, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Group in collaboration with Center for Biotechnology and Forest Tree Improvement (BBPBPTH) in Ministry of Forestry inaugurated a nursery garden of ramin (Gonystylus bancanus) in Riau. This is part of enrichment program and rehabilitation of genetic resources of ramin.
Ramin is threatened by habitat loss. This five year conservation cooperation is initiated by private parties. Ramin is classified in category of light wood with a high sales price. This beautiful wood is important for manufacture and furniture. Ramin is also one of plants listed in Appendix II of CITES, which its use and trade are arranged by regulator.
The first year activity of Ramin rehabilitation program is focused on collection of genetic material and research. There are estimated 10 types of Ramin, which required intensification efforts in its breeding.
One of nursery locations is at PT Arara Abadi, APP pulpwoof supplier. Nursery garden currently has been built with a capacity of 65 thousand seedlings at one time, which can be used for maintenance of seedlings and saplings.
