REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOTA -- Colombia's FARC rebels warned Wednesday of new attacks before their unilateral ceasefire gets under way later this month, saying ongoing tensions could trigger fresh violence.

Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) spokesman Pablo Catatumbo told Blu Radio that attacks may take place prior to the start of a 30-day truce due to be begin on December 15 because of "daily confrontation."

"As long as there is a daily confrontation, either today or tomorrow or the next day, until December 15, there may be attacks," Catatumbo told the broadcaster in an interview.

The FARC declared a unilateral ceasefire on Sunday in a surprise move which followed a deadly bombing blamed on the guerrillas that left eight people dead, including two civilians.

Colombia's government, which is engaged in peace talks with the FARC in Havana, has previously resisted any reciprocal ceasefire until a permanent peace deal is brokered, saying such a move would give FARC a strategic advantage.

Speaking after the FARC bombing last weekend, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos urged the army to "stay on the offensive" and not give assailants "a minute of respite."

Colombia has endured five decades of conflict that has left hundreds of thousands dead and displaced more than 4.5 million.

The FARC -- Colombia's largest and oldest rebel group, which was established in 1964 -- has 7,000 to 8,000 fighters.
