Social issues of Jatigede Dam become government focus

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Hatta Rajasa lead a coordination meeting of Jatigede Dam Project in his office on Monday. Rajasa received a proposal to solve social and environmental problems related to construction of dam located in Cijeungjing village, Sumedang, West Java.

"We will protect it with Presidential Regulation. We will re-discuss this proposal in a week," Rajasa said on Monday.

Head of West Java's Develoment Planning Agency, Deny Juanda Puradimaja explained that this recommendation was given by One Roof System (Samsat). Residents who do not have relocation rights are given allowance for one year worth 13 million IDR per family, including rent house.

Affected residents consist of two groups. First, residents with legal rights from Minister of Home Affairs based on Ministerial Regulation No. 15/1975. About 4,590 families are given 400 square meters of land per family, a house type 36 and one year fund to living new life. Second, residents without legal protection reached six thousand families.

Government expected that fund to solve social and environmental problems of this project reached 700 billion IDR. Jatigede Dam Project in Sumedang is part of the government’s food security program. It is expected to start operations in April next year.
