REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ministry of Public Works said that restoration project of Ciliwung River would begin next year. This project, which becomes main focus of flood mitigation in Jakarta is targeted to be completed in 2016.

"Restoration of Ciliwung River along 19 kilometers will be completed in 2016," Head of Ciliwung-Cisadane Flood Bureau in Ministry of Public Works, T Iskandar said recently.

Contract between Ministry of Public Works and Jakarta Governor has been signed on December 3, 2013. Government prepared 1.2 trillion IDR for technical needs, while land acquisition is fully funded by Jakarta provincial government.

This project should wait for completion of trace construction by city government next year. Iskandar explained that Ministry of Public Works would prepare infrastructure, while provincial government would solve land acquisition problems.

Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo said that land acquisition became main problem of Ciliwung restoration. Government has to relocate 34 thousand people living on riverbank. Provincial government will prepare apartment for affected residents.
