REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Director of Institute for Food Drugs and Cosmetics in Indonesian Ulama Council (LPPOM MUI), Lukmanul Hakim said that five restaurants in Indonesia underwent halal certification. They are Roti Boy, Burger King, Richeese Kuliner Indonesia, Dapur Cokelat and Cimory.
There were also two restaurants, which just have been certified halal, namely Solaria and MM Juice.
"We made an open invitation this September. There are 31 restaurants wanted to get the certification," Hakim said recently.
Most of restaurants are not yet having halal certification. There are also other restaurants, which are not labeled halal but not yet involved in managing the certification, such as Izzi Pizza, Starbucks Coffee, Rice Bowl and Red Bean.
Chairman of MUI, Maruf Amin said that restaurants, which did not have halal certification was not necessarily be haram - a term refers to any act that is forbidden by Allah (God). Halal certification in Indonesia is still a voluntary. MUI cannot force all parties to follow this process. However, MUI is ready to provide information to community about halal restaurants.
