REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- As many as eight countries will participate in the junior rock climbing "Asian Youth Championship" (AYC) to be held in East Java's provincial city of Surabaya from December 11 through 14, an official has said.

The eight countries are Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and host nation Indonesia, according to a press statement by AYC director Larasanto received here on Tuesday.

The number of participating countries is likely to increase, he noted, adding that it is the second time Indonesia will host the rock climbing championship. It earlier hosted the event in 2009.

Larasanto said his team is currently preparing for the event.

The rock climbing event will be conducted at the closed arena of the "Class 5 Recreational Climbing Center", which is located at the entrance area of the Graha Family Surabaya housing complex. The event is being held in a closed arena to prevent any possible difficulties arising because of unforeseen rains.

Larasanto added that this year, the Asian rock climbing championship will be divided into two categories: Youth A for participants aged 16 to 17 years and Youth B for those between 14 and 15 years of age.
