REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MILAN -- Former Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has now confirmed that not only has Erick Thohir become the major shareholder after buying 70% of Moratti’s 98.3% shares, but he is also set to become the club’s official president too, reported by SportPulse.

Many expected Moratti, even with just 28.3% share in the club, to carry on as President, but the businessman from Indonesia has now been named in the role.

At a board meeting on Friday, Moratti said that he thanks everyone for letting him be there and that although he is leaving the decision side of matters at the club, he says he has left it in very capable hands in Thohir.

“This club is making an important step forward on an international level. All of my family who have a role at Inter will remain at the disposal of this club, but we have decided to pass it on.” He then went on to say, “The new owners are professional, enthusiastic and have the desire to make this club grow.”

Moratti took over as president of Inter from Ernesto Pellegrini in 1995, a period where Inter were strongly considered to be underachieving. The last couple of years haven’t been so strong for Inter, but during the 18 years under his leadership, Inter has clinched five Serie A titles in a row (equalling the all-time record), four Coppa Italia, four Supercoppa Italiana, one UEFA Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup and one UEFA Cup.

Although Inter Milan had some good success under the Italian oil tycoon, Moratti was widely criticised for his constant quick sacking of managers and staff, plus other than the UEFA Cup win in 1998, most of the important silverware came from just Roberto Mancini and Jose Mourinho in one of the best club runs ever seen between 2005 and 2010, with the last 3 seasons being a lot more lack-lustre, with just one piece of silverware, the Coppa Italia in 2011, gained since 2010.

So Moratti steps down as president with a new dawn coming for Inter Milan who so far in this 2013-14 Serie A season has been much better following a dismal ninth place finish last time with the Nerazzurri currently holding up a solid fourth place, just three points behind Napoli in third.

As for total shares now in Inter, new president Thohir owns 70%, with Moratti now down to 28.3% (as stated before) and then Pirelli still has their 1.6% ownership with the final 0.1% going to minor shareholders. Moratti has been named by the board as the honorary chairman for the San Siro outfit.
