REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The biggest Japanese e-commerce player in Indonesia, Rakuten Inc managed to acquire Viki.com, a streaming video provider company. It is expected to add more visitors to the online shopping site.
"We hope there will be more contents, especially Japanese content," Director of Marketing and Content in Viki.com, Rebbeca Souw said recently.
Both companies will create a user ID that can be used for both platforms. Viki.com is also an American digital media, which provides so many free films and dramas from various countries with more than 160 subtitles, including Indonesian language. Indonesia is five biggest users in Viki.com with some favorite contents, such as Korean and Taiwanese dramas.
Rakuten customer base and the sales increased from 40 thousand items per day in the first opening to 500 thousand items at this time. In third quarter of 2013, orders paid in Rakuten grew more than 165.6 percent compared to same period in the last year. Gross Merchant Sales (GMS) that are paid grew more than 104.2 percent and Convention Rate grew up to 58.6 percent.
"Indonesia has the potential to be the biggest e-commerce in Asia," Head of Strategic Investment and Business Department in Rakuten, Werner Sutanto added.
