REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUKABUMI -- The House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission IX will summon officials from the Sukabumi district manpower and transmigration office to clarify a report that many companies in the district are employing underage children.
"We will summon them in response to a report from one of the teachers in the Cisaat sub-district that a number of companies in the district are employing underage children," Chairman of the House Commission IX Ribka Tjiptaning said here on Thursday.
The report could serve as proof that many companies still violate the manpower law, he said.
If the owners of companies were found guilty of employing underage children, they could be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail, under the manpower law and the child protection law, he said.
"Let us await the results after the summons. If they are found employing underage children, they can be subject to sanctions," he said.
He noted that the manpower and transmigration office must impose sanctions on companies if they employed underage children.
To prevent child employment, the district administration must tighten the procedure for issuing job seekers' cards to prevent applicants from falsifying their identities, he said.
"The underage children should have the right to continue their education. Don't let them work merely for economic reasons, because the government bears their tuition fees," he said.
