REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta administration has allocated Rp50 billion for the reconstruction work on five traditional markets, an official said.

"The five traditional markets are the Manggis and Pesanggrahan markets in South Jakarta, Kebon Bawang market in North Jakarta, Kampung Duri market in West Jakarta, and Nangka Bungur market in Central Jakarta," Jakarta Market Corporation President Director Djangga Lubis stated on Wednesday.

Manggis market can accommodate 384 vendors; Pesanggrahan, 161; Kebon Wabang, 119; Kampung Duri, 108; and Nangka Bungur, 163.

The reconstruction work on Manggis market is now underway, while Pesanggrahan market's old building is currently being demolished, he remarked.

The new buildings of the five markets are expected to be ready within six to seven months.

Jakarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo officially laid the first cornerstone of the reconstructed markets at a groundbreaking ceremony held at Manggis market on Wednesday.

"Previously, vendors had to pay rent of Rp200-300 million. This year, we will follow a new system: when the markets are rebuilt, free space will be given to the vendors. In saying 'Bismillahirrahmanirrahim,' the reconstruction work on the Manggis, Pesanggrahan, Kebon Bawang, Kampung Duri, and Nangka Bungur markets will begin," the governor added.
