REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON - UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) considered Indonesia to be an example for countries in the world because it managed to improve community development in remote areas. Indonesia is also considered successful in reducing hunger.

"Indonesia's leadership has strong commitment in formulating and conducting programs to reduce poverty and hunger," Deputy Director General of Sciences in FAO, Maria Helena Semedo said on Thursday.

FAO and International Labor Oranization (ILO) are proud to be partner of State Ministry for Development of Disadvantaged Regions in an effort to reduce poverty and hunger in Indonesia, particularly to help people in East Nusa Tenggara. FAO is ready to deploy its experts and sharing experiences to effectively support the program through this partnership.

FAO will conduct a study to get the best way, so that people can improve the ability to work and self employment opportunity. FAO will empower and equip them with health and education knowledge. Semedo said it also needed supports of all provincial and district governments.

Government, FAO and ILO will accelerate development of four pilot areas in East Nusa Tenggara, namely Kupang, Belu, East Timor and East Sumba in 2014-2016. The development will be focused on three main commodities, namely corn, cattle and seaweed.

These activities will require funds worth 14.4 million USD. However, State Ministry for Development of Disadvantaged Regions is only able to allocate budget of 7.2 million USD.
