REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to launch a nationwide Sharia economic movement (GRES) at the National Monument (Monas) square here on Nov. 17.

"We hope the president will inaugurate the Sharia economic movement on Nov. 17," Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Halim Alamsyah said at a press conference here on Thursday.

Organized by Bank Indonesia in cooperation with the Sharia communication center and Sharia finance-related associations, the movement will simultaneously be launched in 17 of the country's 33 provinces, he noted.

He acknowledged that several activities will be used to highlight the launch of the movement, including a journalistic writing contest, student art contest, and the signing of a contract to extend loans under an agreement between the People's Empowerment Institute and Sharia financial institutions across the country.

He expressed hope that the launch of the Sharia economic movement will lead to the signing of various cooperation agreements between Sharia financial institutions and government agencies to speed up the growth of the national Sharia financing industry.

"An example (of such an agreement) is the development of cooperation among social financial institutions (ZISWAF), micro financial institutions, non-Sharia bank institutions, universities and non-governmental organizations to make people's empowerment programs more productive," he added.
