REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Halal industry continues to evolve from time to time. In 1970s, the industry included halal food only. In 1990s, the industry began to spread to halal islamic finance. Now, halal industry becomes a lifestyle.

"Technology allows Muslims in the world to enter new halal markets that have not been touched," President Director of PT Sofyan Hotel Management and Consultant, BA Hadisantoso said recently.

Today, Muslim population reached 1.6 billion to 1.8 billion people or 20 percent of total population in the world. Asia has lots of Muslim population. Based on Pew Research Center, in 2030, the world's Muslim population is estimated to increase to 26 percent.

"Although Indonesia is a country with Muslim majority, but what about the power? This is important because it will change Islamic lifestyle needs," Hadisusanto added.

In sharia hotel industry for example, the hotel service keeps Muslim visitor from anything that inappropriate with Islamic law.  Sharia is not only good for Muslims, but also to non-Muslims. Sofyan Hotel's turnover rose 60 percent in 18 months after turning into Islamic hotel.

In United Kingdom, the sale of halal meat reaches 11 percent per year. In fact, Muslim population in UK is only three percent. It means that halal is not only good for Muslim.

In cosmetic industry, Wardah Cosmetic (Indonesia's brand) has a turnover growth of 75 percent in the last four years. In fact, Nielsen survey previously showed that the growth number is only 15 percent per year or 60 percent in four years.
