REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- District of Mentawai Island in West Sumatra has sea area of 30,018.43 square kilometers. There are 72 surfers paradise as main tourism attractions.
"Three out of 72 locations are top 10 best waves in the world," Head of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports Department in Mentawai, Desti Seminora said recently.
The 72 locations are spread in waters of South Pagai, North Pagai, Siberut and Sipora. The best waves are available in Katiet, South Sipora named Lance's Righ and in Batutongga Island named Makaronis and Siberut.
Regarded as the Most Beautiful Isolated Islands in West Sumatra by some netizens, Mentawai also offers 40 diving locations and 43 locations of fishing tourism. There is the best location for divers named Devil's Island or Batutongga Island in North Sipora. There are 15 resorts to accomodate tourists.
This year, regional government targets to reach seven thousand visitors by the end of 2013. This figure increased compared to the last year which was only six thousand visitors. They particularly came from Australia, United States, Portugal and United Kingdom.
Regent of Mentawai Island, Yudas Sabaggalet said that businessmen from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand were interested to invest in Mentawai Island. They will develop the potential of cultural and marine tourism. All companies are still negotiating and conducting a review and survey to the island.
