REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Deputy Minister of Health, Ali Gufron Mukti said Indonesia didn't need foreign physicians, except for knowledge sharing purpose. His statement followed rejection from some local physicians or doctors over the hiring foreign doctors issue, earlier in South Tangerang, Banten.

Mukti questioned recruitment of foreign physicians by Regional General Hospital (RSUD). Indonesia doesn't need to hire foreign physicians if Indonesian physicians are avaiable and competent.

"As doctors as well as Indonesian citizens, let's have the same stance over decision to hire foreign doctors,"  Mukti said on Thursday.

License for foregn doctors is issued by Indonesian Medical Council (KKI). Meawhile, Chairman of Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), Zaenal Abidin said foreign doctors were only needed for technology and should meet certain requirements according to Medical Practice Regulations in Indonesia. Therefore, technology transfer of foreign doctors is not depending of request of hospital or local government, but it must be required by educational institutions, demand of professional organizations and request of Ministry of Health.
