REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON - An indigenous leader of Waelo Village (a local community) in Ambon, Baman Basan, criticized gold minings in Buru Island and said they had no contribution to local people's welfare. Only a handful of people enjoyed the benifits of those minings, he said.
"Billions IDR is collected and most of them flows into private pockets of tribal council board," Basan said on Monday,
Basan referred to permits, parking fees and other financial benefits enjoyed by tribal council board. Thousands of traditional gold miners from other regions flock Buru Island. Their presence causes some problems to local people that lead to some clashes.
Basan said, the tribal council did not show their sympathy to the victim's families when landslides occured and caused many miners were killed and wounded. He added that they didn't even pay attention when floods hit dozens of villagers. Furthermore, local people are also dissapointed that the government doesn't solved the problem arisen from the minings. Baman said that government must clean Botak Mount from illegal mining activities and disolve tribal council.
