REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDAR LAMPUNG - Tanggamus people in Lampung has known coffee from a long time ago. When the Dutch occupied in Indonesia, Tanggamus people had been familiar with robusta cofee (Coffea canephora).
Tanggamus is one of major robusta coffee producer in Lampung province. The place name itself was taken from name of Mount Tanggamus (2,100 meters above sea level) where the district is located. Coffee plantations can be seen at the slopes of the mountain that has moss forest at the peak.
"Tanggamus contributes 40 percent of total coffee production in Lampung. Robusta coffee is the main coffee variant grown in the mountain and become favourite drink among climbers in Lampung," a successful coffee farmer in Tanggamus, Rohadi said on Saturday.
Robusta coffee has coarse texture, bitter and high caffeine. Robusta coffee of Tanggamus has a typical than other robusta. The tree can reach 12 meters high. This plant is more resistant to weather, pests, deseases and easier to be maintained. The reason is very dependent on soil fertility management in Tanggamus which using natural fertilizers. Geographic location also influences the characteristics of Tanggamus coffee.
The best robusta coffee can only be planted above the altitude of 600 meters above sea level. When at high of 100 to 200 meters above sea level, the taste feels a bit bland. Lampung is one of the best producer of robusta coffe in Indonesia. It's produced in East Lampung, West Lampung, and Tanggamus.
Lampung has 160 thousand hectares of coffee plantations that produce about 144,516 tons of dry coffee beans per year. Although famous with its robusta cofee, Lampung also has a kind of arabica coffee even its amounts are very small.
