REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Regional government of Banyuwangi in East Java plans to organized a surfing competition for three days on May 24 to 26, 2013, to attract tourists to visit Pulau Merah (literally means Red Island -Ed) in Banyuwangi.
According to a local official, Slamet Karyono, Banyuwangi had the Triangle Diamonds for tourism, comprises Ijen crater, Plengkung beach and Sukamade beach. Later, the Red Island was added as another tourist attraction to complete the Triangle Diamonds.
"Pulau Merah such as Teluk Ijo, Rajak Wesi beach, coastal of Wedi Ireng," Karyono said on Saturday. The island also offers ecotourism, such as a man-made cave in Japanese occupation era and Meru Betiri National Park. So, the tourist can stroll to several places at once in the area of Red Island.
For this year, the theme of competition is 'Red Island Banyuwangi International Surfing Competition.' There are three categories of the competitions, local, national and international.
Karyono added there were 128 participants signed up, consisted of 50 local, 50 national and 28 international which came from 18 countries. Local government spent 500 million IDR for the free adminissioned competiion.
