Wild elephants enter villages in Riau

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,  PEKANBARU - Herd of wild elephants entered human settlements in Mandau District, Bengkalis, Riau, damaged crops and caused panic among residents.

"We all panicked and run instantly," a villager, Juwono (39 years), said on Friday.

The herd of wild elephant have entered village since three days a go in Balai Makam Village and damage harvested crop. He said, the elephants usually had come to the village at night when electricity have been off. Juwono estimated there were seven until eight elephants included the younger elephant.

Even more, the elephants also left debris that strewn around the garden, in the road of Jalan Tuanku Tambusai, Balai Makam Village. The residents have reported the matter to local head of village and Riau Central officials Natural Resources Conservation (BBKSD) in Duri, Mandau. The herd of elephants entered villages in the district also occurred last week but they were herded back using the sounds.
