REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Government of Indonesia is planning to change the mechanism of meat import through auction. The move is believed to help controlling the meat price in the market which is soaring today.

Ministry of Trade is still formulating an auction system. Minister of Trade Gita Wirjawan said the system would stimulate competition for the importers, encouraging them to provide high quality product with affordable price.

"The formula will be completed soon. I predict that the process can be done this year," he said on Monday, adding that Coordinating Minister of Economy, Minister of Agriculture and Vice Minister of Finance have agreed with the proposal.

Importers which meet the requirements, such as in their infrastructure and breeding system, can join the auction. The importers are also encouraged to facilitate the absorption of domestic meat.

The current price of meat in the market is around 90,000 IDR per kilogram. He said that government discussed the effort to control the price of meat during coordinating meeting. The meeting resulted that the meat price would not be determined by market price.
