REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia is ambitious to boosts export of fishery products to Africa and Middle East. The market in Africa and Middle East offered great potential, Director General of Fisheries Product Processing and Marketing, Saut P. Hutagalung, said.

The fishery export from Indonesia to Middle East is currently outnumbered by more affordable commodity from India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Philippines. Hutagalung said government would focus on enhancing efficiency of distribution to decrease the cost of export.

As a solution, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries will use direct flight to Dubai served by Emirat Air instead of Garuda Indonesia. He believes that direct filght will cut the cost of product. Indonesia fishery products have successfully entered Hypermart Lulu in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Hypermart Lulu has more than 60 outlets in UAE and more than 120 units in Middle East. "Canned shrimp and tuna are the main products that we export to Saudi Arabia," he said.

Government expects to make Africa and Middle East as main target for export of fishery products in 2013. The products are canned sardine and mackerel, dried fish, salted lobster, shrimp, and tuna.
