REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ministry of trade will issue beef and cattle import license only to 64 companies. Out of 92 companies obtaining import recommendation, only 64 proposed for import license, Vice Minister of Trade Bayu Krisnamurthi said.

"Importation can be started in the first week of January. The license is important to maintain the supply of beef and cattle to Indonesia.

Ministry will monitor the importation every semester. Krisnamurthi said the cattle was available, but the importers were waiting for the license.

The stock of beef cattle in Indonesia is not adequate to fulfil national demand. The condition can lead to beef scarcity and soaring price.

Executive Director of Indonesian Meat Producers and Feedlot Association (Apfindo), Joni Liano, said Indonesia only had 19,000 beef cattle until December. The amount is not sufficient as the demand for beef cattle in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi per day is almost 1,500.
