OIC to talk on women's role

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The fourth Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Conference will talk on the development on women's role. According to Indonesian Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Linda Amalia Sari Gumelar, the forum will discuss women's participation in economy, particularly their opportunity of employment, access to financial and productive resources and the context of migration, .

The minister said that women empowerment in economic had been proven to be able to improve their families and communities' welfare. "These conditions can develop women capacity in other fields such as education, health and politics.

OIC endorses Indonesia to host the conference because Indonesia is the world's third largest country with Muslim population that promotes democratic values. "Many Indonesia women sit on strategic positions," she said.

In the conference, Indonesia will seek opportunity to voice the Islamic values which uphold women's rights and encourage their participation on development. Gumelar expects the conference to adopt policy towards the implementation of women empowerment in OIC member states.

The conference, with the theme 'Strengthening Women's Participation and Roles in Economic Development in OIC Member States', will review the progress on the implementation of the OIC Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women which was adopted in Cairo in 2008.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the conference on December 4 at the Presidential Palace. Minister Gumelar, Secretary General of the OIC Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and Executive Director of UN-Women Michelle Bachelet, are expected to deliver their message during the opening ceremony.
