REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUMBAWA – The quantity of honey in Indonesia seems insufficient compared to the market demand. The country only produces 10-15 tonnes of honey while the demand is five times of the production, which is 50 tonnes.

"We still import honey to fulfill the domestic demand," the Minister of Forestry, Zulkifli Hasan, said on Sunday.

In Indonesia, forest honey is only produced in Nusa Tenggara with Sumbawa as the biggest producer. Honey farming then becomes the tradition in the region.

Government supports efforts to increase honey production in Sumbawa. They expect Sumbawa to contribute to a half of honey need in Indonesia. One of the efforts is by building an Sumbawa Technological Institute (STTS) to do research to improve Sumbawa honey.
