REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially awards the first Indonesian President Soekarno and the Vice President Mohammad Hatta as national heros.
"In the name of state and government, I am the President of Indonesia bestowing a title of national hero to Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta," SBY announced on Wednesday in State Palace.
In their life, Soekarno and Hatta had devoted their life for Indonesian independence. They are the symbol of struggle towards colonialism. Both inspired Indonesian people to awaken, unite, and struggle for victory.
"Their battle as the founding father of Indonesia has rooted in our heart," SBY said.
Soekarno built solidarity among countries struggling for victory. His role is important in the history of Indonesia. With his speeches, entitled 'Indonesia Menggugat' and 'To build the World Anew', he changed the history.
Soekarno, with his strong commitment towards Indonesia, and other world leaders pioneered the forming of Non-Aligned Movement. He also freed Papua from the colonialism of Netherlands.
"He also encouraged people to read, think, and study," he said.
Guntur Soekarnoputra, as the first son of Soekarno, represented him achieving the title. Meanwhile, Hatta was represented by his daughter, Meutia Hatta.
